Eating Seasonally

Updated: Jan 21, 2019

Just like clothes and fashion, there are different things in season. Like florals in summer, Coats in winter and miss matched 60s colours at the snow! Fruit and vegetables also go ‘in’ and ‘out’ of season!

NOTE: This post is a general guide on the seasonality of fruits and vegetables within Australia and is not specific to each of Australia's states or territories!

Benefits of seasonal eating

There are so many benefits of eating your fruits and vegetables when they are in season!! But here are my top 3 benefits:

1. Fresh, tasty and better quality

Fruits and vegetables in season are generally fresher and taste better, sweeter and perfectly ripe. This is because fruits and vegetables have been ripened naturally and harvested at the right time.

2. Cheaper

Fruits and vegetables in season tend to be cheaper. When the produce is locally sourced because it’s in season in your area, then travelling expenses and storage are not required therefore reducing the production costs that are then passed onto the consumer.

Fruits and vegetables that are out of season they are usually more expensive. This is because it is usually sourced from other locations that have a different climate and needs to be stored for long periods of time to offer people a variety of produce all year round.

3. Higher Nutritional Value

Fruits and vegetables in season are more likely to be fresher, consumed closer to harvesting and have a higher nutritional value. This is because when fruits and vegetables are stored for long periods of time some antioxidants, like Vitamin C, folate and carotenes decline over time. Locally in-season sourced fruits and vegetables will also appear brighter and more vibrant rather than limp and dried up.

To make it slightly easier to navigate the seasonality of fruits and vegetables I have created a small guide based on the Australian seasons.

*They are just a general guide from different reputable websites. If you would like more specific seasonal information for your particular state or territory please have a look at the links i have attached at the end of this post!!

SUMMER: December, January & February

AUTUMN: March, April & May

WINTER: June, July & August

SPRING: September, October & November

There it is!! I hope you have found my seasonal guide handy and have learnt something new (I know I did when I was researching to make this post)!!

HAPPY SEASONAL EATING!!!
